Human foot mailed to Canada Conservative party HQ

A police officer removes a package from the Conservative party headquarters in Ottawa, Canada, on Tuesday.

By Alastair Jamieson, msnbc.com

A human hand was found at a mail sorting depot in?Canada's capital?on Tuesday night, just hours after a foot was delivered to the country?s Conservative party headquarters, according to reports.

The discovery came on the same day a janitor in Montreal found a rotting human torso in a suitcase, although police said it was too early to connect the cases.

?It?s just awful,? Conservative MP Brad Trost told the Ottawa Citizen newspaper, adding: ?I don?t think any of us are thinking this necessarily has anything to do with politics.?

A party worker opened a blood-stained box containing the foot at the office in?Ottawa's Albert St.?? near Parliament Hill - before calling police, the newspaper reported.

The?Citizen said police later found a human hand at the Ottawa Postal Terminal, which handles all of the city?s mail. It said the package was not destined for the Conservative Party of Canada but police wouldn?t say where it was to be sent.

Odor
Police Sgt. Steve Hodgson said the package containing the foot?was addressed to the Conservative Party of Canada and not to a specific person, according to the National Post.

The torso discovery in Montreal was made at 10.15 a.m. ET by a janitor who was investigating complaints about a terrible odor coming from behind a building on the city?s Snowdon Street, according to CTV. ?It is not known how long the body part had been there.

?I noticed flies and when I looked closer I saw maggots,? janitor Mike Nadeau told the Ottawa Citizen. ?I got a friend and we got some cutters because there was a little lock on the suitcase. What I saw when we opened it is hard to describe. There was no head and (the torso) was all grey.?

Prostate Cancer Surgery

May 29th, 2012 . by admin

What is prostate cancer surgery?? Prostate cancer is the cancer of the walnut-sized structure in the prostate gland, a part of men?s reproductive organ.? But how will you know if you have this ailment?? Most common symptoms are difficulty in urinating and blood in the urine or semen.? A PSA (prostate specific antigen) test is necessary to fully detect whether an individual has prostate cancer or not. The result of this test is called a Gleason grade wherein a score of 2-5 will suggest a low grade prostate cancer.? This test will be very useful since this will also be used to for monitoring purposes after treatment.

What are the most common treatments utilized when diagnosed with prostate cancer.? The most recommended method is prostate cancer surgery or medically known as radical prostatectomy.?? Surgery usually lasts between three to four hours depending if complications occur or not.? The four methods employed are radical retropubic prostatectomy, laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy, or radical perineal prostatectomy.? All of these methods require general anaesthesia.?? Radical prostatectomy is recommended by surgeons and oncologists alike when the cancer is localized in the prostate area and has not spread to other organs.? Depending on which method of surgery chosen, hospital stay normally takes one to four days.? However, your oncologist will schedule regular check-ups and blood tests after a prostate cancer surgery to continuously monitor for cancer recurrence.

(AP) ? Facebook's stock has fallen below $30 for the first time since its much-awaited public debut this month.

The stock fell $3.07, or 9.6 percent, to close at $28.84 on Tuesday. That's down 24 percent since its public stock debut. It went as low as $28.65 earlier in the day.

Facebook Inc. began trading publicly on May 18 following one of the most anticipated stock offerings in history.

The site, which was born in a Harvard dorm room eight years ago and has grown into a worldwide network of almost a billion people, was supposed to offer proof that social media is a viable business and more than a passing fad.

Facebook's initial public offering of stock priced at $38 and raised $16 billion for Facebook and some of its early investors. It had valued the company at $104 billion ? more than Amazon.com Inc., at $98 billion, at the time.

But the stock's public debut was marred by technical glitches at the Nasdaq Stock Market that delayed trading.

And the company, along with the investment banks that led the IPO, is the subject of at least two shareholder lawsuits. They allege that analysts at the large underwriting investment banks cut their financial forecasts for Facebook just before the IPO and told only a handful of clients. Morgan Stanley has declined to comment. Facebook calls the lawsuits "without merit."

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said that Facebook's stock has been hurt by what he called "near-term issues" that include the Nasdaq glitches, an oversupply of stock that was being offered and the allegations of selective information disclosure.

But he rates the stock "Outperform" and has a 12-month target price of $44.

"Facebook has built a huge moat between it and its competitors, and we endorse Mr. Zuckerberg's mission," he wrote in a note to investors Tuesday, referring to Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg.

With the latest drop, Facebook's value is about $79 billion.

Texas man in wheelchair bowls perfect game

Shawn Beam is perfect.

Beam is celebrating bowling a 300 game Friday night at CityView Lanes in Fort Worth, Texas, KDFW reports.

And what makes the feat even more extraordinary is that he did it from his wheelchair.

'The whole place stops and everybody gathers behind you.'

- Shawn Beam

Beam said he was born with a pinched nerve and has been in a wheelchair all his life. He took up bowling when he was a teenager and has been competing for about 22 years.

Seven or eight strikes a night is normal for him. But on Friday he hit nine. Then he hit 10.

"That's when you know everybody noticed. The whole place stops and everybody gathers behind you," Beam told KDFW-FOX 4.

According to the American Wheelchair Bowling Association, it was the first time a bowler in a wheelchair had ever rolled a perfect game.

Officials at the U.S. Bowling Congress in Arlington, the headquarters for the sport, certified his score and put his game in the record books, the station reports.

Now he just hopes that others who are in a wheelchair know it's possible.

Future of TransCanada?s Mainline could spur Canada?s next great energy debate

? May 25, 2012 ? 6:03 PM ET | Last Updated: May 25, 2012 9:13 PM ET

As if the great debates over proposed pipelines to export oil to the United States and Asia weren?t convulsing Canada enough, a new one is about to divide the country. It involves the future of TransCanada Corp.?s historic Mainline.

For more than half a century, the Mainline has been a reliable workhorse that over winter peaks moved as much as seven billion cubic feet a day (bcf/d) of natural gas from Western Canada ? roughly half of its total production today ? to warm up homes and energize factories in Eastern Canada.

But its use has fallen off sharply during the rest of the year because of the emergence of alternative supplies nearby, pushing pipeline tolls and tempers at both ends of the system through the roof. Indeed, tolls are so high they exceed the price of the natural gas it transports.

While recent oil sands pipeline debates have pitted the oil producing community against the environmental movement, the restructuring of the Mainline is rubbing many old wounds between the energy-producing West and the consuming East.

Indeed, when Canada?s energy regulator, the National Energy Board, kicks off four months of hearings on June 4 in Calgary that will include extended stops in Toronto and Montreal, many of the issues debated during the Mainline?s inception six decades ago will resurface.

Some of the same stakeholder groups will also re-appear ? Western Canadian producers, Eastern Canadian utilities and TransCanada itself ? all with the goal of getting stuck with as little as possible of the $6-billion pipeline?s untenable costs.

Then and now, at issue is whether it?s in the public interest to ship Western Canadian gas to Eastern markets despite high transportation costs as a way to ensure national energy security, when more economic north/south and other solutions are available.

The NEB?s three-member panel, headed by CEO and chairman Ga?tan Caron, will have to sort out how to make best use of the 14,101 kilometres of infrastructure, running from Alberta to Quebec, which it regulates. It will have to set new tolls, decide how to allocate risks and rewards among Mainline shippers and other stakeholders and decide whether the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin should be linked to Eastern markets.

While not officially part of the hearing, there is a new twist to the debate: TransCanada is floating a plan to give the Mainline a new lease on life by converting part of the system to oil service. The multi-billion plan would create a new domestic market for oil sands oil in Eastern Canada at a time other plans are bogged down by environmental opposition, provide respite from high tolls for natural gas shippers and get TransCanada out of a jam. But this, too, is already stoking debate about whether shipping Western oil eastward is the way to go, when larger world oil markets beckon.

The first time Canadians had a Mainline debate was in the 1950s. TransCanada?s predecessor, TransCanada Pipelines Ltd., had just been created with the goal of building a 3,200-kilometre natural gas pipeline linking Alberta to Quebec. The project played into the day?s federal Liberal government political imperative that Canada needed to meet its energy needs before Alberta gas could to flow to the U.S., oil patch historian Earle Gray writes in The Great Canadian Oil Patch.

Producers had strong doubts that shipping gas over such a long distance would be economically feasible or preferable to market-favoured solutions ? such as piping Alberta gas to closer southern markets and nearby U.S. gas to Eastern Canadian markets. But the project went ahead and the first gas from Alberta arrived in Toronto on Oct. 27, 1958.

Still, it left deep political wounds ? a warning to today?s political elites that Canadians take their pipelines very seriously.

A complex plan involving generous government support for the uneconomic line became such a flashpoint that it contributed to the fall of the Liberal government in 1957 after 22 years in power.

?Not since the founding of the Canadian Pacific Railway nearly a century before had Canada seen such a political maelstrom involving a private corporation,? Mr. Gray writes. ?It reached its climax in the most bitter, tumultuous political debate that has ever rocked the Parliament of Canada and left in its wake shattered careers and broken lives ? So impassioned were the feelings that some men fainted, others were left fatigued and in broken health, and one member of Parliament died of a heart attack.?

Much like in the ?50s, there are now cheaper options for Eastern Canadian consumers, particularly with the discovery of massive shale gas deposits in the Eastern U.S. such as the Marcellus. Ample supplies have depressed prices to the point they hardly justify the cost of long-haul transportation.

Meanwhile, Western producers are looking to Asia to sell their gas, where prices are higher and the market hungrier, and don?t see the point of continuing to pay for an asset that doesn?t fit into their strategies for the future.

After years of unsuccessful negotiations, TransCanada presented a restructuring proposal to the NEB in the fall it says achieves ?the greatest good for the greatest number? ? but that doesn?t seem to make anyone happy. It?s the reason the proposal has landed before the NEB for a ruling.

?You have competing interests ? producers on one side, utilities on the other and marketers in between, and there has been no real compromise by anybody,? said Cameron Gingrich, senior manager of gas services at the Calgary-based consultancy, Ziff Energy Group. ?It?s definitely going to be a contentious hearing.?

The cornerstone of the Calgary-based company?s restructuring proposal is to cut tolls on the Mainline and increase tolls on short-haul pipelines, primarily the massive Alberta-based Nova Gas Transmission Ltd. (NGTL) system it also owns.

?For many years, our system has been a base-load, Empress (Alta.) to Eastern Canada/NortheasternU.S. system,? said TransCanada senior-vice president Karl Johannson, who will be one of the hearing?s top witnesses. ?Now it?s more short-hauls in Eastern Canada region and we have less volumes come out from Empress. And our tolls have to change to reflect that. Our shorter hauls have to take on a bigger burden of our overall cost of service.?

In general terms, TransCanada is proposing to increase tolls on the Alberta/NGTL system by 5? to 21? per thousand cubic feet (mcf), about 25%, and to reduce the toll on the Mainline to $1.39 per gigajoule (the two lines use different units), from $2.09, about 40%.

The new tolls would keep the Mainline afloat until volumes return, which TransCanada is confident will happen as natural gas prices eventually recover and the restructured Mainline makes Western Canadian natural gas more competitive.

Like producers, the pipeline company has no doubt that the days of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin supplying six bcf/d of gas to eastern markets are over.

?There are too many alternatives,? Mr. Johansson conceded. ?But there is still a lot of load on that line. There are still going to be daily flows. It?s still one of the biggest pipeline systems in North America.?

TransCanada believes that after benefitting from the system, producers have an obligation to sustain it since it was built for them.

The company also believes it?s in the interest of Western Canadian producers to maintain the option of shipping to Eastern Canadian markets. While new supplies are indeed available close by, the Mainline is providing essential fuel to Eastern Canada during cold winter months that cannot be easily replaced. The pipeline is less than half full on an average basis, but during the home-heating season it still runs close to capacity.

Western Canadian gas producers find many of TransCanada?s arguments outrageous and its restructuring proposal a way of transferring Western Canadian wealth to the East.

By increasing tolls on the Alberta system, all Western Canadian consumers will pay higher prices for natural gas, while Eastern Canadian consumers and short haul users benefit from lower Mainline tolls, they argue.

A subsidy to the Mainline of $350-million a year will make it hard for the already-struggling producers to stay in business.

Unlike the Mainline, the Alberta system is healthy and transports 10 bcf/d of gas across the West, picking up supplies from growing shale deposits, feeding growing oil sand operations and population centres, connecting to other pipelines headed for the U.S.

?The one thing that is very offensive to Western Canada is this idea they have that they will cause their subsidiary company, NGTL, to sign a big healthy contract with the Mainline and provide them with a whole lot of revenue for service that simply is not something that NGTL should be doing and is going be harmful to Western Canadian producers, and in fact harmful to everyone in Western Canada,? said Nikol Schultz, vice-president for pipeline regulation and general counsel at the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, which will represent producer interests at the hearings.

Producers, who supply little gas to the Mainline system today, are proposing to ?levelize? or reduce tolls over a period of four or five years until volumes recover. While they don?t believe that will happen, they are relying on TransCanada?s own rosy forecast. Alternatively, they propose leaving the tolls the way they are and to let market forces prevail.

Other options have also been talked about, including taking the system out of service, or securitizing it so that becomes a separate asset, perhaps supported by government financial backing.

The oil conversion option has been floated for many years, but it seems to be gaining momentum. Russ Girling, TransCanada?s CEO, talked about it at the company?s annual meeting in April.

?We are going to actively pursue it and see if we can turn it into an opportunity for both, the oil-and-gas industry and TransCanada,? Mr. Girling said to the media, suggesting the line could carry between 300,000 and 800,000 barrels a day to Eastern markets and that the conversion was being encouraged by refiners in Eastern Canada and oil producers in Western Canada.

Mr. Gingrich said that with uncertainties around the proposed Northern Gateway, TransMountain and Keystone XL oil sands pipelines there is a need for new outlets for oil sands oil.

Mr. Johansson said TransCanada is doing ?significant due diligence? on the plan and talking to potential shippers, but is not prepared to go into details because it?s not developed enough.

CAPP said it would press the company for information during the NEB hearings.

A portion of the line has already been converted to oil service in recent years and became part of the Keystone oil pipeline to the U.S.

The more ambitious plan to move of Western Canadian oil to Eastern Canada would also need to make market sense, Mr. Schultz said.

He noted that in the past, long-haul oil transportation was so costly it didn?t pay, and today Eastern Canada imports nearly 800,000 barrels a day from overseas.

The idea is expected to advance in parallel with the hearings, and potentially result in a separate application if there is shipper support.

Whether it?s in the business of shipping oil or gas, producers believes it?s time for TransCanada, as the owner of the Mainline, to start bearing the risk of its choices, rather than keep shifting it to others.

Troy Roness: Call Me a 'Milksop' All You Wish, But I'm No 'Yes Man'

What are we going to do about all of the "non-manly" guys running around the United States? Apparently, the great assumption is that by engaging in activities ranging from military exercises to boy scouting, we could eliminate the "problem" altogether.

I am 100-percent in support of greater parental involvement in children's lives these days, especially when positive role models, life skills, coping mechanisms, and constructive reinforcement are lacking at alarming levels. Joel Stein's appearance this week on Fox & Friends regarding his book, Man-Made, doesn't just talk about how culture views men and how they "should" act; it really points out how misunderstood men and boys are when they don't conform to societal views of the traditional guy.

The book attempts to show how a scared, soon-to-be father tries to become manlier by hunting, rebuilding a house, trying boot camp, and going into the UFC ring. In the end, as expected, the fa?ade that all men need to act a certain way to be accepted is busted. I feel terrible that the author actually labeled himself "effete." This is the word thrown at children, boys, men, and fathers who may not act or parent in a particular way. But there are so many holes in this "man-made" theory that you could drive a truck through it.

Is the thought of becoming more masculine by virtue of performing tasks or going through certain trials just an emotional high? I ask because at times, after treatments for addiction or illness or at the beginning of a relationship, people go through a "honeymoon" period where life appears perfect and they feel as if they were never in trouble. Does this actually have a lasting impact? My background in cognitive science tells me this begs further research.

As a member of the LGBT community, I'm sure I am able to speak for many men, and women, who are stereotyped into categories of how we should or shouldn't behave. I think back to the author of this book and wonder at what point someone becomes "enough." When I say that, I am referring to the point at which it's viewed as sufficient for you or someone else. Just like recovery, it is a different timeline for everyone.

As a gay man, I am probably thought by those who do not know me to enjoy certain activities, prefer certain music, have a particular political affiliation, etc. That's fine. Allow them to believe as they wish. But just for argument's sake, what exactly could have made me masculine or more feminine? From the book's perspective, I ought to be more masculine than most guys I know. I played baseball, basketball, track, hockey, and football; ran college track; branded and herded cattle; spent a lot of time traveling across the country and world, apart from my family (you'll understand why I list this if you read the book); fell on glass during a camping trip with no supplies to treat the injury; tore ligaments in my knee; knocked teeth out; broke my chin on concrete; and managed to slice my hand down to the bone with my own track cleat. I was taught to never give up or back down, and a perfect example is when I lay injured on the football field and heard my family scream, "You're fine! Get back up!"

So at what point did I become "man enough" for myself, my friends, or the world? What defines or shows the line of when "enough is enough"? If I break bones, do trainings, or am abandoned or taught senseless lessons, does that draw the line? Or is it at another point in my life when I am emotionally scarred because I didn't allow myself to talk about things I may have wanted to? The truth is, I don't believe in that line or label, and I actually feel that emotionally, I have become more of a "man" out of the sheer privilege of identifying with others than the physical toll life has taken.

For one individual, this type of experience may "work" in a particular circumstance, just as some medications may work for some and not others. But to say that men in general aren't "man enough" is a vast, sweeping generalization. This is where society is far behind the times. A complete individual understands their emotions and is confident enough to express them as they feel they need.

The LGBT community, men, women, and society in general need to stop being defined by what we are said to be lacking or by what we don't "fit" into. Instead, we should take a look at our own emotions, the distinguishing ways in which we experience them, and their role in who we are. Wouldn't it be an overwhelming sense of gratification if we understood that concept, and why we are the way we are? Wouldn't it be great if we could finally explain ourselves without preoccupation or hesitancy as a result of fear?

The LGBT community and I'm sure other groups often feel that they need to be completely self-reliant. They are sometimes forced to focus on providing solely for themselves and feel they have to hide their emotions. This behavior is reinforced every day in the various stereotypes characterized by our culture.

Listen, honest power does not lie in what we regard as being strong, today. It lies in the capacity of a human being to express their inner feelings and recognize the intuitive perceptions of others.

Buehrle, Marlins stay hot, beat Giants

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:21 p.m. ET May 26, 2012

MIAMI (AP) - The Miami Marlins continue to win even with their closer struggling.

Mark Buehrle pitched into the eighth inning and the Miami Marlins moved within a victory of tying the team record for the most in a month with a 5-3 win over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday.

Giancarlo Stanton hit two doubles and scored twice while Logan Morrison drove in two runs for the Marlins. Miami is a major league best 18-7 in May. The Marlins went 19-10 in August 1997.

"It's outstanding, we're playing some good ball," Buehrle said. "Everything is coming together at the same time. Hopefully we can keep it going into the next month and the couple days we have left in this month."

Buehrle (5-4) allowed two runs and eight hits while throwing 69 of 100 pitches for strikes.

"He's going to give you his heart out there," Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I know this man for many years and every time he's out there I guarantee you he's going to give you everything he has. He's worth every penny he's ever made win or lose."

Buehrle was replaced by Steve Cishek after Ryan Theriot tripled to center past a diving Chris Coghlan with one out in the eighth. Cishek retired Melky Cabrera on a ground out, which scored Theriot. Buster Posey grounded out to end the inning.

Heath Bell, who was pulled in the ninth during Friday's game in favor of Cishek as Bell allowed two runs and retired just one batter, continued his struggles. Bell allowed a single to Angel Pagan to open the ninth and after recording an out, he walked the two next two batters to load the bases ending his night early again.

"As a manager the last thing you want to do is take your closer out every day," Guillen said. "That's a very hard feeling and tough situation. We give him every opportunity we can to come out of this once again and he can't get it done."

Bell signed a three-year $27-million contract in the offseason, but has struggled to deliver. He is 2-3 with an 8.47 ERA and four blown saves in 11 chances.

"I don't think anyone else is trying harder than he is," Buehrle said. "Obviously he's frustrated going out there."

Randy Choate relieved Bell and got Nate Schierholtz to fly out scoring Pagan cutting the deficit to 5-3. He struck out Gregor Blanco to end the game. It was Choate's first save since September 23, 2009 when he was with Tampa Bay.

"Two of my hits to lefties this year was to (Blanco) so I was a little pumped that I finally got him out," Choate said. "I tried treating it like any other appearance. Obviously there is way more adrenaline going because the crowd is going nuts and the bases are loaded, but I tried to take it as get the lefties out and get out of the game."

Madison Bumgarner (5-4) took the loss allowing five runs and seven hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

"Just missing today," Bumgarner said.

Blanco had three of San Francisco's nine hits.

"I feel really good," Blanco said. "I've been working on hitting more balls on the gorund and it's been great. I'm more confident. This game is all about opportunities and I know I can do good things."

With one out in the third inning and the scored tied at 1, Jose Reyes and Omar Infante each reached with base hits and successfully pulled off a double steal with Hanley Ramirez batting. Ramirez followed with a single to left scoring Reyes. After Stanton walked, Morrison grounded into what appeared to be an inning-ending double play, but Emmanuel Burriss' throw bounced passed first baseman Brett Pill allowing Infante and Ramirez to score giving the Marlins a 4-1 lead.

"(Bumgarner) had that one inning," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "That's what's been happening the last couple of days. We're just trying to limit the damage."

Stanton doubled to leadoff the second and scored on a single by Donovan Solano for the Marlins first run of the game. He doubled again to leadoff the sixth and scored on a Morrison double to deep center field.

"You know what you want to do (with Stanton), I just wasn't able to do it," Bumgarner said. "I just didn't make pitches to him. It's not any different than anybody else. I just missed and when I did he hit it."

The Giants tied the game at 1 with a base hit by Blanco as Burriss slide into home safely, narrowly beating Stanton's throw from right.

NOTES: Guillen said after the game he will consider removing Bell from the closer role for the second time this season. "Right now it's not working," Guillen said. "I'm going to sleep over it and see what ideas we come up with." ... Giants LF Melky Cabrera came into the game hitting .692 (9 of 13) against Buehrle, but went 0 for 3 with a strikeout. ... Giants ace Tim Lincecum fell to 2-5 with a 6.41 ERA following Friday's loss. "He's taking it hard, believe me," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Lincecum's struggles. "We want to send a message that we know that he's giving it everything he's got." ... Stanton is hitting .333 (32 of 96) in May. ... The Marlins will send RHP Ricky Nolasco (5-2, 4.31 ERA) to the mound Sunday in the series finale as the Giants will counter with RHP Matt Cain (4-2, 2.94 ERA). .

(AP) ? Between bites of some "frites" at the players' restaurant, Oracene Price smiled at the thought of being back at the French Open with her daughters, Serena and Venus Williams.

The family wasn't at Roland Garros a year ago, making it the first Grand Slam tournament since 2003 without either Williams. Serena was still working her way back from a series of health scares, including two foot operations and blood clots. Venus revealed in August she'd been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that causes fatigue.

Now they've returned.

"I'm happy about it. They're happy about it," Price said Friday. "Serena's thanking God that she's able to play at all. And so is Venus, with her illness; it's still there. They're doing the best they can do."

Which tends to be pretty good, of course.

Both have been ranked No. 1. Serena's 13 Grand Slam titles are by far the most among active women; Venus comes next with seven. None of the other entrants in the French Open, which begins Sunday, owns more career Grand Slam match wins than Serena's 211 or Venus' 210.

And it's certainly tough to match Serena's self-confidence on a tennis court.

When it was pointed out to her Friday that five women divvied up the past five Grand Slam titles ? Kim Clijsters at the 2011 Australian Open, followed by Li Na at the French Open, Petra Kvitova at Wimbledon, Sam Stosur at the U.S. Open, and current No. 1 Victoria Azarenka at January's Australian Open ? Serena needed only a second or two to formulate a response.

"Hopefully," she said, "it will be six this time ? with me."

She's 17-0 on clay this season and among the favorites heading into the French Open, which she won in 2002.

What would a second title, a decade later, mean to her?

"It would be really intense and really crazy," Serena said. "I mean, obviously there are several people here that want to win. I think I'm one of those people."

Price said a championship at Roland Garros "would be huge" for Serena, because it would make clear that "it doesn't look like she's ready to quit" at 30 years old.

Asked whether her younger daughter is ready to get her name etched on another Grand Slam trophy, Price chuckled.

"For sure," she said. "You know Serena. She's got to be on the list at least once a year, right?"

One challenging step along the way over the next two weeks could come in the quarterfinals, where Serena might have to face three-time major champion Maria Sharapova, who is seeded second and also a popular pick.

"She's such an experienced player that has been under so many different circumstances and achieved so much in her career," Sharapova said. "When she's fit, she's extremely strong on the court and hits a very powerful ball. That makes her very dangerous."

That sounds like a rather fair scouting report for Sharapova, too, even on clay these days. Having once described her movement on the slow red surface as something akin to a "cow on ice," the Russian can get around well on the stuff.

"I'm much more comfortable on this surface. Even though I don't play too many tournaments on it throughout the year, I feel like with every year that has come, and the clay-court season that arrives, I feel physically stronger," Sharapova said. "That's definitely helped me in the recovery process, as well. I'm enjoying it a bit more. Before, I felt like in matches I was saving myself a little bit because I didn't always believe that physically I could play seven matches in difficult, heavy conditions in Europe."

She's coming off her second consecutive title on clay at the Italian Open, where she beat Li in the final Sunday.

Citing a bothersome back, Serena withdrew before she was supposed to face Li in the Rome semifinals. But that feels "a lot better" after treatment, the American said.

If good health is one key to Serena's success, another is the mental boost she gets from having Venus alongside her.

Venus, who turns 32 next month, resumed playing in March after more than six months off the tour. A first-round match Sunday against 19-year-old Paula Ormaechea of Argentina will be her first Grand Slam competition since the first round of the U.S. Open on Aug. 29.

"I just don't know anyone out there who has gone through everything that she's gone through and just remaining completely positive," Serena said about her sister. "It's never easy for anyone who's going through what she's going through. To do what she's doing and play a professional sport is, I think, a whole new level of mental strength. ...

"Everything that she's doing is so inspiring for me."

Marlins drop Lincecum to 2-5

MIAMI (AP) - Steve Cishek turned ninth-inning jeers to cheers, and all he had to do was strike out major league hits leader Melky Cabrera to end the game.

Cishek earned his first save of the year after struggling All-Star closer Heath Bell blew another one Friday night, and the Miami Marlins held on to beat the San Francisco Giants 7-6.

"It's the ultimate adrenaline-rush situation," Cishek said. "It's something you always dream about doing."

Bell entered in the ninth with a three-run lead but drew boos when he gave up three hits. Manager Ozzie Guillen yanked him with one out, runners at second and third and the Marlins clinging to a 7-5 lead.

"I had a gut feeling he's not throwing well," Guillen said. "He gets paid to close games, I get paid to win games. It's a very hard, uncomfortable move. Your closer is your closer, but from the beginning I didn't feel comfortable with it. I needed a different look. But he's going to be back there as my closer tomorrow."

Chris Coghlan put the Marlins ahead to stay when he snapped out of a season-long slump with a tiebreaking three-run homer off Tim Lincecum in the sixth inning. Coghlan, who has shuttled between the Marlins and the minors since winning the NL Rookie of the Year award in 2009, was batting .104 when he hit his first home run since last June 11.

"I don't even know what I'm hitting. I just know it's not good," Coghlan said. "You don't think about those things. Every time you step in the box you try to feel like you're hitting 1.000."

Giancarlo Stanton became the first player to hit the Marlins' home run sculpture when he connected against Lincecum (2-5). The Giants' right-hander gave up six runs in 5 2-3 innings, which hiked his ERA to 6.41. He's 0-3 in his past five starts.

"If I could just eliminate that one bad inning, wherever it falls, that's the big thing," Lincecum said. "It has to do with being focused and being locked in on every pitch."

The Marlins improved to 17-7 this month, best in the majors, and broke the franchise record for victories in May.

Bell nearly let it slip away, blowing a save for the fifth time in 12 chances. He allowed two runs, hiking his ERA to 8.10.

Scattered boos began when Bell gave up a leadoff double to Joaquin Arias. By the time he left the game, fans were hooting were at top volume.

"They want to win, and if somebody is not doing well, they're going to let you know it," Bell said. "I like that. That means the crowd is into it and they're passionate about their team and they care about wins and losses."

Bell had no complaint about being pulled by Guillen, either.

"This year I just haven't proven that I can get out of jams," he said. "Ozzie went with Shek, and it worked out."

After Brandon Crawford hit a sacrifice fly to make it 7-6, Cishek fell behind Cabrera 3-1. The side-winding right-hander then threw consecutive sliders for called strikes and the victory.

"He made some quality pitches and won that battle," Cabrera said through an interpreter.

Cabrera, who came into the game leading the majors with 67 hits, pulled his third homer of the season just inside the right field foul pole. He also tripled and is batting .363.

The Giants outhit Miami 14-7 but went 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position.

Dan Jennings (1-0) pitched a perfect sixth for his first major league win hours after being recalled from Triple-A New Orleans.

Lincecum took a 3-1 lead into the sixth but failed to make it through the inning. After the Marlins loaded the bases, John Buck's sacrifice fly tied the game. Coghlan then pulled an 0-1 pitch over the fence, ending Lincecum's night.

Despite his struggles, Lincecum hadn't given up a homer in 50 1-3 innings until Stanton connected in the fourth inning. The ball landed in the base of the sculpture for the Marlins' first run.

The home run was the 10th this month for Stanton, and his 11th of the season.

"It's incredible, his ability to hit the ball," Cabrera said. "He has amazing power."

NOTES: The crowd of 27,123 included Miami Heat owner Micky Arison, whose team begins the NBA Eastern Conference finals two miles from the ballpark Monday. ... Aubrey Huff had a single and improved to 6 for 12 (.500) against Marlins starter Josh Johnson. ... In his past 13 home games, Stanton is batting .373 (19 for 51) with five home runs. ... The Giants committed two errors and have 49 this season, most in the majors.

Living Below the Line 2012: My Diary ? Lords of the Blog

Here, in?my five-day diary,?I reveal how?I survived on porridge, water and vegetable soup as part of my Live Below the Line campaign 2012.

THE RULES

I have to live on ?1 a day for five consecutive days.

Worldwide, 1.4billion people live on this. Thankfully, my ?1 a day is just food and drink, not everything else as well like them.

No gifts, anything used from the kitchen must be accounted for, but I don?t need to allocate for electricity or other living costs.

I will have three meals a day and drink tap water.

I need to avoid coffee, milk, bread, soft drinks, alcohol and meat.

WEDNESDAY

Breakfast ? Porridge/raisins 10p

Lunch ? Lentil and onion soup 16p

Dinner ? Baked potato and beans?58p

Tea bags/raisins snack ? 10p

Day one and it?s the Queen?s Speech and it seems appropriate that I start my challenge to highlight extreme poverty today.

The House of Lords is full of people dressed in robes and ready for lunches their guests will enjoy.

Meanwhile, I am in the kitchen heating up the lentil soup I made earlier and carried in on the Tube.

I am full of admiration for the Lords Speaker, Baroness Frances D?Souza, who is also Living Below the Line for charity this week. She welcomes the Queen and carries out all her ceremonial duties while also resisting temptation.

The Queen?s Speech is disappointing. The Government?s previous promise to legislate for 0.7 per cent of GNP to go to Development Aid is missing, although it will happen inthe budget.

A ?500 donation arrives from my friend Annie Lennox.

What a star she is, in every respect. Inspiring.

In the office people offer to buy me coffee, but a key rule in this challenge is no gifts.

I?m glad there are nolate-night votes, and I go home to cook my potato and leave temptation behind.

THURSDAY

Breakfast ? Porridge and raisins 10p

Lunch ? Sandwiches, soup and yoghurt 35p

Dinner ? Soup and sandwich 31p

Tea bags/raisins snack ? 10p

Back in the Lords, and I lunch with the Ladies who Live Below the Line.

Six peers are joining LBTL 2012 to raise money for charity, including one from each party, and a Bishop.

Baroness Anne Jenkin, my favourite Tory, has organised a soup kitchen and made soup, sandwiches and yoghurts for 35p per person.

We swap stories of the challenge so far. For those on day four, this helps them get to the end.Faced with the challenge of nowhere to cook later, I grab leftover sandwiches to eat in the evening with the remains of yesterday?s soup.

A fantastic donation of ?4000 comes in from one of the businessmen who support another charity I help, Cash for Kids. His generosity motivates me to battle on.

Heading back to Scotland, I cut the time available for temptation and get the early sleeper train to Inverness, leaving London at 9.15pm and arriving in Stirling 5am. For once I don?t eat or drink in the buffet car. I go straight to my berth and read.

FRIDAY

Breakfast ? Porridge and raisins 10p

Lunch ? Banana 19p

Dinner ? Soup 32p

Tea bags and raisins snack ? 10p

I arrive home in plenty of time to cook porridgefor breakfast.

Despite my patriotic zeal for all things Scottish, I have never liked porridge.

Eating it without milk (too expensive for my budget) is even less attractive. But, adding raisins improves the taste and it is vital for a filling, cheap and healthy start to the day.

Off to Glasgow to meet David Moulsdale of Optical Express, with a banana for lunch on the train.

More offers of coffee and cakes from well-meaning colleagues, but my bottle of tap water is my limit for the afternoon and the ever-generous David agrees to sponsor me.

Meanwhile, Come Dine Below the Line is out on the Channel Four website at www.channel4.com/programmes/come-dine-with-me/articles/come-dine-below-the-line.

We filmed this short version of the popular programme at Anne Jenkin?s house, with Harry Potter star Bonnie Wright among the guests.

It really is excellent and I circulate the link on Twitter and Facebook.

Back home and the cravings hit hard. I am not organised, so have to settle for another pot of lentil and onion soup for dinner. Very boring.

SATURDAY

Breakfast ? Porridge and raisins 10p

Lunch ? Banana 19p

Dinner ? Soup, rice and veg 51p

Tea bags/raisins snack ? 10p

The Daily Record want my LBTL diary. For a donation, I agree. Come Dine Below the Line has secured more donations. Edging closer to my target.

Off to the Isle of Arran for a couple of nights. Still badly organised for cooking anything cheap, so it?s a banana again for lunch.

I stop at a charity plant sale, but it is also selling the most delicious homemade cakes. I buy some plants and leave quickly.

Those lovely cakes were almost too tempting, but I must be strong and resist. My stomach protests all the way to Arran.

In Lamlash, I really need to eat something different. Some value stir fry veg from the local Co-op comes to my rescue. A portion of that and some rice and I have a dinner.

It is a beautiful sunset. I would love to sit out and look at the sea with a beer in hand, but that will have to wait for another weekend.

SUNDAY

Breakfast ? Porridge and raisins 10p

Lunch ? Soup 20p

Dinner ? Baked potato and beans 68p

Tea bags/raisins snack ? 10p

Last day. I?ve got headaches worse than a hangover.

Headaches are a noticeable part of LBTL, probably caused by hunger.

My father grows veg, so leeks and carrots from him for a last pot of soup save a few pennies. This is allowed, as long as I allocate the costs of growing them.

An old university friend living in Australia has spotted my updates on Twitter and posts a ?500 donation online.

After all these years, I am touched by his generosity and I know now I will make it to midnight.

An old school friend I have not seen for years offers a drink or a pub lunch but I can?t, so we chat walking in the rain instead. I must be mad.

Midnight approaches and other friends register late donations.

All these contributions, large and small, are appreciated, and they will help our project make a difference in Malawi.

I have made it. Five pounds lighter. Raised more than ?13,000. Chuffed.
