Prostate cancer vaccine Provenge, New Suspicions Arise

(Reuters) - Prostate cancer vaccine Provenge has long incited passions unlike any other cancer therapy.

Doctors who raised doubts about it received death threats. Health regulators and lawmakers faced loud protests at their offices. A physician at the American Cancer Society was so intimidated by Provenge partisans that he yanked a skeptical discussion of it from his blog.

The vitriol dissipated in April 2010, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Provenge for advanced prostate cancer, satisfying investors in manufacturer Dendreon and patients who for years had demanded it be put on the market.

But the bell on Round Two sounded when Marie Huber, a trained scientist and former hedge-fund analyst, made it her mission in the last year to analyze what she believes are deadly flaws in the studies that led to the approval of Provenge by the FDA.

She argues that the main reason Provenge seemed to extend survival - a crucial factor in the FDA's decision - was that older men in the study who did not receive Provenge died months sooner than similar patients in other studies.

She raises the possibility the "placebo" they received was actually harmful and made Provenge, known scientifically as sipuleucel-T, look better by comparison. Source

"Punk'd" kicked off in a big way Thursday night. Justin Bieber was enlisted to host the premiere episode of the new season, and he didn't shy away from pulling fast ones on his A-list friends.

Bieber made Taylor Swift believe she ruined a wedding, leaving her in tears. And when he pranked MTV's own Rob Dyrdek, he caught on and ended up joining forces with the Biebs to get Sean Kingston instead; the stunned singer stood up for an angry assistant who drove her boss' car into a restaurant. Bieber also double-crossed Miley Cyrus, who thought she was pranking him, but he ended up fighting the kids she sent out to poke fun of him. She definitely wasn't expecting that and ended up pretty shocked by the reverse prank.

Bieber is a known prankster in real life, and his pal and label signee Carly Rae Jepsen opened up to MTV News about his punker side — and proudly said she's ready to take him on anytime.

"I haven't seen that side of him myself yet, but I heard he's a bit of a prankster, which is good. I like that," she told MTV News. "I'm going to give him a run for his money. I enjoy a prank or two myself. It's on! Watch your back!"

Cyrus will be back for more "Punk'd" fun later this season, when she hosts her own episode. She'll punk beau Liam Hemsworth and pal Khloé Kardashian. Demi Lovato, the Wanted and more will also get "Punk'd" later this season.

'Project Runway: All Stars' winner is sew happy

It's about dang time!

Last week was like an hourlong tease, as we watched Austin Scarlett, Mondo Guerra and Michael Costello prepare for the finale runway show on "Project Runway All Stars," but never actually got to see their big moment.

That's what tonight was for.

The final three pulled up to Gotham Hall, where the fashion show took place, and problems started to occur.

Scarlett had to finish his red carpet dress, which meant there were pins on that piece that were hopefully going to be covered by a sash.

Michael's pieces weren't fitting right on the models. One outfit's sleeve was way too tight or another dress was six inches too big. What's going on?! He definitely had to rush to make that work before the show.

Strangely enough, Mondo -- who is known to stress out more than the others -- didn't have much to worry about. His biggest issue was a pair of tights that were supposed to be opaque but were actually sheer. So a little booty might show, we love that.

Regardless of what hurdles came their way, it was time to line up, because judgment day has finally arrived.

First, Austin showed off his self-titled collection. Then it was Mondo's "Therapy" line, followed lastly by Michael's "Serengeti" pieces.

Everything seemed to have come off perfectly! The judges -- including two guest judges: Tommy Hilfiger and Ken Downing from Neiman Marcus -- didn't give anything away while watching the designs on the catwalk.

So what did they have to say?

Isaac Mizrahi didn't feel Austin's work was a collection. And the wedding dress threw off Tommy Hilfiger, although many of the judges agreed lots of women would love to get married in that gown, and Austin has a sort of "youth to his glamour."

Mizrahi felt Mondo's line was the most cohesive collection. "This designer really really gets it," Hilfiger said of Guerra.
